Ensuring Gender-Equitable Cybercrime Reduction

Despite significant gains for the Filipino female across all thoroughout decades, as signified by its 19th rank globally in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report (1),  there are still significant number of unreported/underreported cases of gender-based cybercrimes in the country (2).  In 2008,  only 4% of sample-size cases of all gender-based violence cases were reported to formal authorities such as the Philippine National Police (3), which currently has a Women and Children Cybercrime Protection Unit. 

Undetected and underreported gender-based cybercrimes, further brought by sociocultural blinders of dismissal and fear of retalliation, cannot completely be put to justice by unhampered surveillance across all platforms and location. This strategy would only lead to unethical and unconstitutional infringement of privacy rights, especially of women's safe spaces.

Another hurdle towards equitable cybersecurity is the gap between genders in terms of internet access and skill literacy (4). Avoidance and detterence of online gender-based violence also relies on primary prevention on the end of victims. Equipping them knowledge on how to identify threats, how to fight back on untoward digital elements, and proper use and documentation of digital platforms will ignite them to combat possible harrasment and deception and would be a key weapon that troubleshoots digital inequality.
